Clue found to age-related blindness!

One among the major breakthrough, scientists 've found a clue to the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that is found mostly among elder people. The experiment could lead to cure the prevalent type of blindness. According to international team of researchers, the AMD affects more than 500,000 people in the UK & considered as the incurable!

Scientists 've found an enzyme known as DICER1 that stops functioning & leads to blindness. They said that the macula is a part of the eye that is found in the centre of the retina & responsible for the vision. As the AMD progresses the vision declines accordingly. Older people find difficult in reading, driving & even recognizing others. However, the reason is unknown why the disease develops, but it may be due to smoking habit, hyper tension & having relatives with the disease.

The study published in the journal Nature noticed that the enzyme DICER1 is less active in the retina & destroys the material Alu RNA. With the research, the scientist could find pathways to therapy. Researchers said that first the classes of molecules need to be described that can help either increasing the DICER1 levels or block Alu RNA. Secondly, they need to understand more about the biological processes that play vital role in the reduction of the DICER1 levels.
