Sexually/Physically abused girl child more prone to stroke!

WASHINGTON: According to a recent study, girls who 've been sexually or physically abused may be more vulnerable to heart attacks & strokes as adults! The study was conducted by Brigham University. Rich-Edwards, associate professor in medicine Brigham University & Women's Hospital in Boston led the study.

As per study, found that girls who experienced repeated episodes of forced sex in childhood or in adolescence had a 62% higher risk of cardiovascular disease as adults. Several physical abuse in childhood or adolescence was associated with a 45% increased risk of cardiovascular events.

Mild to moderate physical or sexual abuse was not associated with increased risk. According to a Brigham statement, Janet Rich-Edwards said that the single biggest factor explaining the link between severe child abuse & adult cardio disease was the tendency of abused girls to 've gained more weight throughout adolescence & into adulthood.

The researchers studied the associations of child & adolescent abuse with confirmed heart attacks & strokes from 1989 to 2007 among 67,102 women in the Nurses' Health Study II. 11% reported forced sexual activity during childhood & adolescence & 9% reported severe physical abuse.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2011. Rich-Edwards also added saying that women who experience abuse need to take special care of their physical & emotional well-being to reduce their risk of chronic disease.
