1 lakh HIV infections averted in India!

In a significant development in the reduction of the spread of HIV in India, more than 1 lakh cases 've been averted over the past five years in the country due to several campaigns. 

According to a study in the journal "The Lancet", around 2.4 million people are affected with HIV virus in India. But the project like Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded "Avahan" has been able to spread awareness among the people in the country.

The 338 million USD project was launched in six states including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Manipur & Nagaland in 2003 as a part of campaign to reduce the spread of the deadly virus HIV. 

The project was meant to encourage the sex workers & their clients, & other people worldwide to adopt the precaution to avoid the avoid the HIV infection. As per the study conducted by Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation, University of Washington, University of Hong Kong & the Public Health Foundation of India, 1,00,178 HIV infections were averted due to the campaign between 2003 & 2008. 

HIV spreads in India due to unprotected sex, which is due to lack of awareness. But the project "Avahan" has successfully brought a significant reduction in several states in the country.
