Coriander oil is capable of fighting with bacteria!

According to recent studies, Coriander oil can lead to the cessation & sometimes death of harmful bacteria causing food poisoning. Coriander oil is extracted from the seeds of coriander, a common green herb.

Coriander is famous worldwide as an important spice. Coriander oil is also known for its medicinal properties. It has been used as household remedy for nausea, pain relief, indigestion & treating fungal infection since centuries.

The research, on the effect of coriander oil on bacteria, was performed by Dr. Fernanda Domingues of Portugal, & her team. They took 12 different strains for the test & found that coriander oil has killed or slowed the growth of all the bacteria.

As per Dr. Domingues, coriander oil wears away the membrane surrounding the bacterial cell which acts as a barrier between the cell & its environment. The disruption of the membrane then leads to the inhibition of essential processes including respiration. This ultimately causes death of the bacterial cell.

Every year the food borne diseases causes 76 million illnesses worldwide. But now, with this finding, researchers are planning for the development of new food additives containing coriander oil. This could help in the reduction of the risk of many diseases & even prevention of bacterial spoilage of food.

This is also reported that coriander oil would be added in drugs in the form of lotions, mouth rinses & pills to help combat drug-resistant bacterial infections. The role of coriander in the destruction of bacteria has open new hopes for the researchers in finding ways to reduce the deadly effects of bacteria.
