According to the researchers of a new study, they are urging teens to turn down the volume of their iPods, siting numbers that indicate that hearing loss is on the rise.
The study suggests that hearing loss in young people has risen by as much as a third over the last 15 years. This study was based on national surveys conducted on American teens between 12 & 19 years of age.
One conducted in the early 90’s found that up to 15% of young people 've some form of hearing loss directly related to them listening to music but 15 years later that percentage rose to 18%. “That’s a few kids per classroom who will 've hearing problems,” researcher Dr. Josef Shargorodsky of Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston told Reuters Health.
“Teenagers really underestimate how much noise they are exposed to. Often the individual won’t notice it, but even slight hearing loss may lead to differences in language development & learning.” This is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
