Prostate Surgery can be painless

MANGALORE: City-based Mangala Hospital & Kidney Foundation has added the state-of-the-art laser prostatectomy unit to its range of high-end instruments to provide cutting edge treatment.
Prostate surgeryThis Bio Litec 150 watt diode laser unit is most powerful laser available in the market currently for prostate surgery. Acquisition of the unit is all the more special given that 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Laser.
Ganapathi P, managing director of hospital, said, "The unit has 980mm laser wavelength. It is well absorbed by both water as well as haemoglobin making it ideal & powerful medical laser available for prostate surgery. It is delivered through a special "twister glass fibre" via a small calibre laser cystoscope. The procedure is usually done under spinal anaesthesia & patient can be discharged in 48 hours."

Prostatic enlargement is a common problem for aged men. It results in lower urinary tract symptoms. Many of them require surgical removal of the prostate. Initially this was done by open method which was painful. Prostatectomy by laser vaporisation can be safely performed in many conditions. Moreover, since bleeding, fluid absorption & pain are negligible, patients can be discharged within a day or two.

With the addition of a laser for prostate to the existing 10 watt Holmium YAG Laser & the flexible ureteroscope, the hospital has complete a range of lasers for urological surgery - prostate, bladder cancer & urinary stones. "So far, patients had to travel to corporate hospitals in Bangalore and undergo laser prostatectomy at considerable expense. This procedure will be performed at the above hospital at a much lower cost," he said.
